Remember "Hammer Films"...well they are coming back! Universal to Relaunch Classic Movie Monster Franchises

Fantastic news for all classic horror movie fans (such as yours truly)!!!
Latest news coming out of Deadline.com,

EXCLUSIVE: In recent years Universal Pictures has become defined by its The Fast And The Furious, Despicable Me, Bourne and Jurassic Park franchises. But the studio’s most enduring legacy is its library of classic movie monsters that include Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf Man, Creature Of The Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man, Bride Of Frankenstein, and The Mummy. Universal is now dedicating renewed resources and an unprecedented, far-reaching commitment to revitalize its monster heritage.
frankenThe studio is in early stages of developing a substantial new production endeavor that will expand and unify a network of classic characters and stories. The architects of that narrative will be Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan. Kurtzman recently broke with partner Roberto Orci, but his big-scale projects have included Transformers, Star Trek and The Amazing Spider-Man. Morgan is the writer behind five installments of The Fast And The Furious, which has been Universal’s most reliably lucrative franchise. It’s not set in stone yet if either will write, but they will soon be going around town enlisting talent to bring new cinematic life to these enduring characters from lore, literature and Universal’s own library. While Universal has selectively tapped its Movie Monster library for The Mummy, Van Helsing, The Wolfman, and the upcoming Dracula Untold, this will be the first time that the studio has formalized an approach to these classic characters in a cohesive, connected way rather than as a series of stand-alone projects by disparate filmmaking teams.
dracuThey’ve begun the meetings to put together an interconnected slate of Monster films, and the first will be a reboot of The Mummy, which will be released April 22, 2016. Part of their duty will be to work closely with production, marketing, promotions and consumer product to support the revival. They will also reevaluate projects which have preexisting attachments, and bring it under one cohesive strategy.
creatureWhile some of those monster pictures haven’t panned out, this seems like a smart move. If Marvel Studios and Disney can build a billion-dollar business relying on the Marvel Comics superhero character library, why shouldn’t Universal redouble its efforts to dust off and modernize the classic movie monsters that inspired many of the movie monsters we see today?

Star Trek 3 News and plot details. Release date confirmed

From an interview with  Star Trek star Zachary Quinto.
Variety online was able to get some plot details out of the Spoke actor.

"Director Roberto Orci has already promised that the upcoming “Star Trek 3″ will head back into deep space and star Zachary Quinto has now teased slightly more about the plot.
Quinto told audiences on Friday at the Television Critics Press Tour that the latest installment of the rebooted franchise will most likely revolve around the five-year mission. As narrated by James T. Kirk in the opening to “Star Trek: The Original Series,” the five-year mission is “to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”
“I think the five-year mission will be a part of this next film in some way,” Quinto said while promoting his new Starz docuseries “The Chair.” “We’re coming up on the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic sci-fi series in entertainment history so it’s inherently an ongoing story. But I do think that we’ll feel some sense of evolution in these characters that’s been building through the first few films.”
The mission was an assignment given to Starfleet starships to explore uncharted space in the original series.
Quinto, who plays Spock in the franchise, also described new helmer Orci as a Trekkie purist.
“Bob (Orci) is definitely sort of a purist about the ‘Trek’ universe so I’ve spoken to him a number of times about his ideas and they’re really exciting and I’m really excited that we get to be a part of his feature directorial debut,” he said. “It’ll be a different world without J.J. (Abrams) on set every day, but this is a family and Bob is an essential part of that family and we’re all really excited to see where it goes. … The script is being tightened and polished and finished, and I imagine that the phone will be ringing in the next few months to see when we’ll go back into production.”
The sequel marks Orci’s directorial debut. Orci, who co-wrote the first two movies, will also help pen “Star Trek 3.” He co-wrote “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ and the first two “Transformers” movies. Abrams will produce this third installment after directing the first two films.
“Star Trek 3″ is set to hit theaters in 2016.

Breaking Bad "Better Call Saul" spinoff, behind the scene pics & plot details revealed

If you were a fan of Breaking Bad, you should have probably heard by now that show favorite Saul Goodman is getting his own spin-off series.
Better Call Saul has been in development almost as soon as the series came to an end.
AMC has released some plot details as well as behind the scene production images from the upcoming show.
Details out of AMC are as follow:

"AMC today released 2 photos from the set of the "Breaking Bad" spinoff "Better Call Saul," currently in production in Albuquerque, NM.

The photos feature series stars Bob Odenkirk and Michael McKean.
In addition, the network confirmed the line-up of series regulars for Saul, set to premiere in early 2015. Joining Odenkirk are Jonathan Banks as "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut, Michael Mando  as Nacho,  all new and old characters will represent both legitimate and illegitimate sides of the law.

Although it has been said that the series will jump around in time, "Better Call Saul" is described as being a prequel "Breaking Bad". Gilligan and Peter Gould created the show together and serve as co-showrunners of the premiere season. The series is set six years before Saul Goodman (Odenkirk) meets Walter White. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and, often, against Jimmy, is Erhmantraut (Banks). The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in criminal lawyer.  The series tone is dramatic, woven through with dark humor.

As previously announced, Gilligan directed the first episode of the series, which has already been greenlit for a second season of 13 episodes. The debut season will consist of 10 episodes.

New 'The Fantastic Four' film news- Dr Doom

I was not a fan of the original Marvel comic and loathed the latest film efforts of The Fantastic Four, however the latest version is looking promising
Here's some Fantastic Four film news for anyone interested

Kebbell will go up against Jamie Bell, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Miles Teller as Marvel's First Family with production expected to begin in Baton Rouge this month.

The film is set for a summer 2014 release

Review on Jason Bateman's "Bad Words"

Here is my short and unedited review of Jason Bateman's directing and acting effort "Bad Words"

Vulgar profanity and witty jokes simply act as fillers for this average comedy.
Starring Jason Bateman, 'Bad Words' tells the story of a 40 year high school dropout who, by finding a loophole in spelling bee contests, competes against high schoolers as a sort of revenge for his missed childhood.
The jokes are funny but few and far between, and the entire movie relies a little to heavily on Bateman.

Although the humor of 'Bad Words' is reminiscent of a lighter version of 'Bad Santa'...and along the lines of what I would consider funny, this film did not keep me entertained. Jokes aside, the interaction between characters is weak and any non-Bateman related scene were lame.
I love me some Jason Bateman, and you can clearly see his humor stamped throughout the film, but the story is thin and unfortunately- despite positive reviews, I can only recommend this movie as a weekend comedy filler.

The Walking Dead season finale is going to be "bloody and deadly"- news

News out of Hollywood Reporter

AMC's The Walking Dead wraps its fourth season Sunday with an episode that promises to pack a wallop, judging by the zombie drama's three previous finales.
A refresher: Season one featured the suicide/bombing at the CDC after Rick (Andrew Lincoln) learned from Jenner that everyone was infected; season two featured the start of the "Ricktatorship" and first appearance of Michonne (Danai Gurira); and last season ended with Andrea's shocking death.

So how deadly and bloody will this weekend's season-four finale be? The Hollywood Reporter quizzed executive producers Scott M. Gimple and Robert Kirkman -- as well as a few castmembers -- to find out. Of course, there's always the off chance that it ends with a hopeful message.

Kirkman, who created the comics the AMC zombie drama is based on, warned: "I would expect a very high level of deadliness. Our season finale is not going to disappoint anyone; we've got some big stuff planned."
Gimple, who has taken a "remix" approach to the comics and a nuanced approach to the series as showrunner this season, says: "It's pretty deadly. There will be some very difficult, shaking moments for these characters. Everything they know is shaken."
Michael Cudlitz, who boarded the show this year as Army guy with a mission and comics favorite Abraham, cut right to the chase: "The season finale is pretty damn bloody. It's bloody and deadly."

Norman Reedus, whose Daryl has been accepted into the "Claimers" group after Beth's abduction, warns that the episode is "insane -- it's f---ing nuts!"
Lauren Cohan, whose Maggie suffered the loss of her father in season four's midseason finale and was reunited with her husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun), in the penultimate episode, hopes the gang -- the first to arrive at sanctuary Terminus -- catches a bit of a breather, though she isn't expecting it. "Can't these guys get a break?! It's The Walking Dead! There are worse threats than death."
Melissa McBride, who has had to kill Karen and David in the first half and Lizzie and her sister, Mika, in the back half, warns the finale may compare to the Governor's brutal attack on the prison. "All hell breaks loose! Shots are fired!"
Meanwhile, exec producer Greg Nicotero describes the finale as the "perfect culmination" of all the Easter eggs that have been planted all season long. "Every beat and moment leads somewhere and pays off," he says. "We spent a lot of time crafting those bits and pieces. Seeing where the season goes and how it ends -- the last line in the episode gave me chills when I first read it -- I think people are going to love it. People are going to feel like they went on an amazing journey and all we've done is open a new door to a new journey. The threat level is high. It's suspenseful, thrilling and exciting."
The Walking Dead season finale airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on AMC.

New 'Harry Potter" films in the works based on "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find"

Warner Bros. Pictures CEO Kevin Tsujihara was interview by The New York Times and revealed a bit more about what the studio is planning for J.K. Rowling's upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and its DC Comics slate.
It was previously announced that "Fantastic Beasts" would be a film series, but now Tsujihara says they are specifically developing a trilogy.
The article says: "Wherever he learned the skill, his deft touch became clear to Hollywood's creative community last September. That is when Warner announced that Ms. Rowling had agreed to adapt for the big screen her 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,' a 2001 book billed as one of Harry Potter's Hogwarts textbooks. Three megamovies are planned. The main character will be a 'magizoologist' named Newt Scamander. The stories, neither prequels or sequels, will start in New York about seven decades before the arrival of Mr. Potter and his pals."

Tsujihara also commented on the DC Comics properties they are working on. While only Zack Snyder's Superman/Batman film has officially been announced for a May 6, 2016 release, expect an announcement soon for a "film series," which we assume will include more comic book characters.

"As for DC Entertainment, cross-studio collaboration to make better use of its comic book characters appears to have accelerated considerably since Mr. Tsujihara took over, in part because he eliminated some management layers. (He has not named a chief operating officer and did not replace Mr. Rosenblum and Mr. Robinov, choosing instead to divide up their duties and assume some himself.) Two new television shows are coming to the CW and Fox, including one based on the Flash and another on a young Batman, and a film series will be announced in the near future, Mr. Tsujihara said. It is expected to include a "Justice League" movie.

FX's American Horror Story: FreakShow Adds Michael Chiklis

News out of Paleyfest in Los Angeles from Ryan Murphy and his team behind "American Horror Story" took to the stage to reflect on "American Horror Story: Coven" and to look ahead at "American Horror Story: Freak Show," the FX series' fourth story arc.

Murphy revealed to the audience that Michael Chiklis ("The Shield," "Fantastic Four" films) will be joining the freak show; he'll star as Evan Peters' father.

Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Jamie Brewer, Denis O'Hare and Frances Conroy, as previously reported,  are returning as well.

Details about "Freak Show" pulled from Paleyfest's Twitter are this: The fourth season is about a "freak show" not a carnival or circus and it will be set in Florida.

American Horror Story: Freakshow will air on the FX network sometime in October

Sin City: A Dame To Kill official Trailer & TV Series News

From New York Times

Robert Rodriguez is hard at work on the eagerly-awaited second Sin City movie, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. The film was originally due in cinemas this year, but has been put back to a release in August 2014 instead. That means it'll follow the first film by nine years, but you won't have to wait too long after that for further on-screen Sin City adventures, it seems.
That's because The Weinstein Company is reportedly mulling over a Sin City television spin-off, which would follow the cinematic release of A Dame To Kill For. Both Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez are involved in the television production.
The Weinstein Company also has the television take on Scream on its slate, A pilot for that is underway for MTV.
Also, the firm is reportedly working with Frank Darabont to put together a 10-part television series of The Mist, based on the Stephen King book. Darabont previously made a rightly-acclaimed film version of the book.
More on all of these projects once I hear more...

Game of Thrones... The MOVIE. Big screen news from George R.R .Martin himself

News out of The Hollywood Reporter :

Could Daenerys Targaryen's dragons be heading to a multiplex?

Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin says the prospect is being actively discussed.

"It all depends on how long the main series runs," Martin told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday following the season-four premiere of the hit HBO series in New York. "Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know."

The best-selling author said another big-screen possibility being considered is one based on Tales of Dunk and Egg, a series of three prequel novellas Martin penned that revolve around a group of characters, including Ser Duncan the Tall, who lived in the mythical Westeros 90 years before the events depicted in A Song of Ice and Fire.

"They could be the basis for [a film]," Martin added at the post-premiere bash held at the Museum of Natural History, where a suspended giant whale cast a shadow over the crowd not unlike one of Martin's dragons. "I have written these three stories, and I have about a dozen more."
Martin says the prequel characters are the direct ancestors of some of Game of Thrones' players, but he wouldn't reveal how they relate.
Warner Bros. would be the natural fit for a studio partner. Warners released the two films based on the long-running HBO series Sex and the City and is behind the upcoming big-screen adaptation of Entourage. The studio also knows how to market a dragon tale, with its The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug having earned nearly $1 billion worldwide.

Doug Liman to Direct Splinter Cell with Tom Hardy Headlining

The video game announced for development as a motion picture property in 2012 with Tom Hardy becoming attached to star last year, Deadline today reports that Splinter Cell has found a director in Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow).

The first game, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, was released in 2002 and set in 2004, following the adventures of Sam Fisher, a covert operative assigned to a top-secret National Security Agency branch called the Third Echelon.

The game has had several sequels including, most recently, Tom Clancy's Spinter Cell: Conviction, released in 2010. The latest game, "Blacklist" was released last August.

The International's Eric Warren Singer is providing the screenplay.

Casting of J.K. Simmons confirmed for the upcoming Terminator: Genesis TV series

Fans of the Terminators series might be happy to hear the latest confirmed casting news of famed TV and film actor JK Simmons.

Simmons best known for playing Jonah J Jameson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man series as well as con-man Vern Schiller from HBO's OZ

Simmons is set to play a regular role in the upcoming Terminator: Genesis as a "weary and alcoholic detective who has followed a bizarre case involving Sarah Connor and robots for more than three decades."

The reboot of the franchise being produced by Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions will bring back Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role with Jai Courtney playing Kyle Reese, Jason Clarke as John Connor and "Game of Thrones" star Emilia Clarke playing Sarah Connor. The idea is to thread together ideas from the previous movies to re-launch the story of a cyborg from the future sent back to prevent computers from gaining sentience and turning on humanity.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Simmons' character has been following the case since 1984, which is the year in which the original Terminator, directed by James Cameron, was released.

Simmons has been a regular on the big screen for many years, but he recently returned to television starring in NBC's comedy "Growing Up Fisher" and recently co-starred in the Sundance award-winning drama Whiplash opposite Miles Teller, which will be released by Sony Pictures Classics. He can also be seen daily on TV in commercials for Farmers Insurance.

Captain Marvel film could see the light ... so says Marvel Studio president

News out of Bad Ass Digest
It's only a matter of time before Marvel Studios releases a film which focuses on one of their many wonderful female heroes. There have been several rumors and stories regarding a potential Black Widow movie, but in a recent interview with Badass Digest, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige indicates they would rather start fresh with a new character.

"Frankly if we do a Black Widow movie after Age of Ultron, when she’s been central in three or four movies I don’t think we’d get the quote unquote credit for it. People would say ‘She’s already a big giant superhero!’ But if we had a great idea, we’d do it....I like the idea if we’re going to do a [female lead] do a new one. Do a wholly new character, do an origin story."

But which hero would they use? Feige was asked about Captain Marvel, to which he replied:

"We’ve talked a lot about [Captain Marvel]. I think that would be very cool."

Captain Marvel has seen a surge in popularity in the recent years, due largely in part to her revived comic series that saw former Ms. Marvel Carol Danvers "promoted" to the moniker of the former Kree superhero.

A look back at my Oscar predictions...going 15 for 16 isn't bad

(Note: Submitted - but not yet edited)

The 2014 Oscars have come and gone, and after last year's hosting fiasco that was the comedic duo of  James Franco and Anne Hathaway, the Academy played it somewhat safe this time around by hiring media darling Ellen DeGeneres. Ellen and the academy's team of writers did a great job balancing humoristic light jabs and seemingly sporadically funny moments a-la pizza delivery or the infamous Samsung plugged selfie.
The star studded event was not without controversy...an exchange between Liza Minnelli and Ellen made some headlines when the host called the stage legend a male impersonator of herself.
Water under the bridge perhaps, but the media is always looking for controversy even when there is really none.
With  fun musical  performances by Pharrell William and Idina Menzel and Ellen being funny Ellen, the Academy pulled of a successful show.
I do hope that Ellen is invited again next year to host and that the format and flow remains the same for the coming years.
Oh yes...lets not forget this is an award show, where hardware is handed out to a a select few...
Should I point out that yours truly has predicted 15 of 16 winners ;)
