Sad, ironic and somehow funny:

I can't make this one up...
This had to happen in Hawaii of course due to the time zone.
Not Gone with The Wind, not  Citizen Kane or  The Cabinet of Dr Caligari ... but rather the latest stoner movie with a fitting title: This Is The End.

The last Blockbuster rental was made at a Hawaii location at 11PM on 11/9.

The heydays of video cassette rental is long behind us. We have now fully embraced the digital age, a world where torrents and Netflix provides convenient and free movie content.
Not that long ago, if I wanted to rent the latest movie releases I would scour each locally owned video rental store in my neighborhood in hopes to grab myself a copy.  If the movie I was looking for was rented out at one shop I would move 2 blocks down the street to the next one and the next... and the next until I got a hold of scarce copy. If I was desperate to find that special release, I did have a few tricks up my sleeve; some movie rental stores had cassettes laid out on shelves, stacked behind the box-cover, and sometimes...more often than none, cassettes could get mixed up with other movies set besides them. A copy of Jurassic Park behind a box cover of Police Academy 5 was a common sight.
My other trick was to hang around at the rental shop at around 6 or 7 pm....the exact time that rentals were due in. The cassettes would be then be laid out on a tray behind the counter, ready to be put back on the shelves....or snatched up  by yours truly.


Blockbuster is sadly closing, and although it never quite provided the same adventurous enthusiasm feelings I had scouring the locally owned movie stores, it had become the go to place for movie rentals.
For me, the saddest part, is that my son will never experience the thrill of visiting a movie rental store, where over priced snacks, gumball machines with free rental prizes and pre-packaged  stale popcorn were common sight.

It is not only a sad day in movie rental service, but also a sad day for movie lovers, who enjoy a full movie experience, from rented the movie, to buying the popcorn and yes, even attempt to get that free movie rental from the dollar gumball machine

RIP Blockbuster, you will be missed but do not fret as you will be in good company with the movie drive-in lots
